Revived Men’s Open will be a permanent fixture

FOLLOWING a successful return to the bowling calendar, tournament secretary Stewart Barton says the Leamington Spa Men’s Open is now here to stay.

A shortage of committee members and a lack of sponsorship led to the demise of the tournament after its 66th outing in 2006.

However, interest remained strong among bowlers and the formation of a new committee last summer led to the historic tournament being revived for 2011.

The decision to reinstate the event appears justified, with competitors travelling from as far afield as Ross-on-Wye, York, Oxford and Burton-on-Trent.

And, while Barton does not envisage a return to the days when players needed to qualify for the event, he says a new sense of optimism surrounds the Open.

“We had a fantastic week and with financial support already pledged for next year, we can look forward to next year’s Open with a great deal of confidence.

“Many entry forms were taken away - we had 250 printed and we had to get another 150 done.

“The big improvement in the greens has made a big difference.

“Many favourable comments about the greens have been heard during the week and this will help to enhance the reputation of the Open and will encourage people to return next year.

“It all bodes well for the future and now we’re looking to take it to the next level.”

Next year’s tournament will run from Sunday July 15 to Friday July 20.
