Malcolm is the champion as wife Jenny settles for second-best

The ladies’ and men’s handicap were the centrepiece of the Royal Leamington Spa finals day, with husband and wife pair Malcolm and Jenny Wickens narrowly failing to make it a historic family double.

The morning’s play saw Sue Deavall win the Sadler Cup (novice) with Mavis Dale runner-up and Cynthia Briggs overcome Dawn Horne in a very close final for the ladies’ handicap.

Graham White beat Dick Williams in the men’s equivalent, while Dick Allibon and Bob Allcoat beat Ray White and Rex Fox to lift the Donald Bowl.

In the afternoon, Malcolm Wickens battled his way through to become the new men’s champion.

Meanwhile, wife Jenny, who won her pairs match in the morning alongside partner June Sumners, suffered defeat against Dawn Horne in the ladies’ showpiece.

Dave Turner beat Ted North in the Jeffs Cup (novice), while Alan Taylor and Bill Claridge saw off Barry Dale and Ray Whiteto claim the Jubilee Cup.

The Millenium Bowl went to Anne Tarrant and Wyn Jackson, with Cherry Plant and Elizabeth Glynn Jones runners-up.

Both the ladies’ and men’s two-wood competitions took place at 4pm, with Allibon beating Dick Williams and Horne overcoming Vi Palmer to win her second final of the day.

The mixed pairs was played on the Monday, with Dawn Horne and husband Jerry losing narrowly to Donna Kerr and partner Dick Williams.

Sonia Stranks was part of both the highest winning rinks as Spa’s ladies recorded back to back victories. Stranks skipped a 19-8 success as Spa won their three-rink triples 42-33 at Avenue and was a part of the Wynn Jackson triple which claimed a 27-13 success in the 70-40 victory over visitors Bidford-on-Avon.

A three and a five on the last two ends from Mary Lou Milner’s rink earned Warwick Boat Club’s ladies a 45-40 victory over Ilmington in a match curtailed to 16 ends because of rain.

The turnaround earned Milner a 18-13 success, with Vivienne Griffin (16-12) Boat Club’s other winning skip.
