The game opened brightly for Ks with a regulation catch and drive securing position for Jonny Cresswell to crash over for a try converted by Tom Kendall.

The next period was dominated by scrappy play with errors and penalties aplenty.

Malvern took heart from the hosts’ inability to string phases together and camped on Ks’ five-metre line, with Gareth Renowden and then Michael Jones averting the danger.

A scrum on halfway led to a textbook combination from 8, 9 and 14 which allowed Josh Hickman to go over for a converted try, giving hope to Ks coaches that structured play would hold sway over end-of-season sevens’ frolics.

The second half began with a nasty collision which saw Kendall leave the field with a rearranged nose to be replaced by Rhys Jones, making his first appearance in the ones for several years.

His first touch led to a length-of-the-field try rounded off by Hickman who landed a superb conversion from the touchline.

This set the pattern for most of the second half with Kenilworth threatening every time they gained possession.

Ed Hannam was next on the scoresheet before a Rhys Jones steal from a promising Malvern lineout restored possession for Ks, who minutes later saw Thompson release Renowden under the sticks for a converted try which took the score to 33-0.

Bobby Thompson was next to cross but Malvern, who never gave up the ghost fashioned a score for their industrious scrum-half Longley after numerous phases in Ks’ 22.

The final score was a beauty. From a scrum on their own 22, Renowden fed Dom Sheehan on a great angle before taking the return and feeding Thompson who in turn released Jones for his maiden first team try. Hickman added the extras.
