Kenilworth are going from strength to strength in the Birmingham League

A strong Kenilworth Runners squad recorded their best-ever score and seventh place at the second Birmingham & District Cross Country League fixture at Abingdon Park in Northampton.

Andy Siggers continued his recent good form, leading the club’s runners home in 30th place in 35:12.

Behind Siggers, a battle royal ensued with Rich Simkiss, Phil Gould, Chris McCarthy and Paul Andrew fighting for second placing for the club.

After places were exchanged several times, it was eventually McCarthy who was able to make the decisive break on the final lap, with Simkiss and Gould finishing immediately behind him before a Loughborough University athlete held off Andrew, who finished one place further back.

Completing the scoring six was Stuart Hopkins who despite battling with illness during the week, continued his long streak of counting for the team.

The B team finished third on the day, to stay in third overall.

Leamington’s senior men finished fifth in Division Two at Burbage Common in Nuneaton to leave them fifth at the half-way point of the season, just 62 points off a promotion place.

The race was won by Alex George of Gloucester in 34:24 with Leamington’s Richard Harper in third place just 11 seconds behind.

He was followed home by Andy Savery (35:52) in ninth.

The scoring team was completed by Jamie Langley (12th in 36:39), Matt Butler (68th in 40:05), Craig Bower (74th in 40:11) and George Loveday (77th in 40.23) who was also the eighth junior.

The B team also finished fifth on the day and are in fourth place overall in their division.
