Jackson showing his class despite running costs starting to mount up

At the midpoint break in the year, Warwick rally driver Matthew Jackson is exceeding all expectations and leading a number of national championships aboard his Super1000 specification Nissan Micra.

“I set a target of a top-three finish in class on every round with ideally being in and around the top ten up to 1400cc car on every rally this year,” said Jackson.

“With four events down, I am leading the 1.4C class in the BTRDA and lying seventh overall up to 1400cc car.

“I am very proud of this achievement to date having even missed two rounds due to completing my university degree.

“Aside from this I am also leading the Super1000 Championship as well as the ANWCC 2wd Cup and Forest Championship junior award.”

Jackson claimed a class win at the recent Dukeries Rally but the motorsport engineering graduate admits he is struggling to cope with his budget constraints.

‘The hardest thing for us to contend with in the rallying world is cost.

“It is not a cheap sport and I headed into the sport knowing this.

“However, as the pace increases, the running costs increase.

“For example, the tyre bill on the recent Nicky Grist stages was in excess of £500 for a one-day event.

“Some damage was also sustained on the car in the event due to a number of large bumps so again this puts a large stretch on the budget.

“What is very pleasing is being in the position I am in with only a very small family and friend-run team.”

There are three events left in the 2014 campaign, with Jackson hoping to maintain his good form at the Woodpecker Rally on August 30, which is based in Ludlow.

The event uses some classic Welsh stages such as Radnor and Haye Park.
