Rugby & East Warwckshire Hockey Club round-up from the final week of games

Leek 6

REWHC Men’s 1st XI 0

The 1st XI were put out of their misery at the end of a testing season. Rugby competed in the first half going in at half time only 1-0 down.

In the second half Leek, at the top of the table, showed no mercy in their hunt for promotion and Rugby had no answer, resulting in their relegation from the Midlands Premier league. They will be hoping to regroup over the summer and come straight back stronger next season.

REWHC Men’s 2nd XI 2

Khalsa 1

The Khalsa team appeared significantly weaker than the previous encounter, however periods of poor play meant Rugby were unable to capitalise to full extent. Dan Harris scored another penalty flick and Lee scored the other. Danny Bell got Man of the Match for a fine display in goal and keeping Rugby in the game.

Leek 3

REWHC Men’s 3rd XI 7

Men’s 3s ended on a high with a dominant display away to Leek.

It was the home team that scored first but Rugby sprung into life and responded with Pete ‘Kingslayer’ Crisford bringing himself on and leading the charge scoring his first of the season. Gaz Unett and Ryan Hibberd soon converted two and three.

Nick Foster, supported by Brignal, Brindley and Mackay worked hard in midfield. Although Leek pulled two back Rugby went up a gear and finished the job with goals from Gaz (2), Mackey and Brignal (also getting his first of the season).

Honourable mentions this week to Sam Fletcher who played out on pitch and to Man of the Match Gaz Unett for a hat-trick.

REWHC Men’s 4th XI 5

West Bridgford 2

Belper 2

REWHC Men’s 5th XI 2

Mens 5ths drew 2-2 at Belper to finish sixth in their league.

They took the lead early through a Hughes strike off a penalty corner and continued to threaten their goal throughout the half with some Nobes and Harrison pressure.

In the second half, some poor marking led to Rugby conceding two early goals but responded well, with Rich and Man of the Match Keith working some nice balls out wide. Sinnett scored a tomahawk to level the match but Rugby were unable to find a winner.

REWHC Men’s 6th XI 3

Cov & NW 0

Rugby dominated throughout against a team who, in their own words, didn’t really turn up. Retiring team stalwart Bowering scored a hat-trick, all three set up by Massie, who was a constant presence up-front but knew from experience to leave the ball for the forwards do the goal-scoring.

Hewitt looked good throughout. Mowbray, Walker and Naylor kept things so tight at the back that keeper Robson may as well have not been there. Meanwhile the youthful trio of Hedderwick, Dixon and Mourant showed great pace and distribution throughout.

Warwick Uni 1

Ladies 1s finished the season with a draw to give 19 wins and three draws to remain undefeated throughout! Well done to Laura Harris for the goal and the whole team this season. Thanks also to the team’s supporters.

REWHC Ladies 2nd XI 4

Edgbaston 1

The Ladies 2s rounded off the season with their best performance yet and a 4-1 win over Edgbaston.

Rugby were 3-0 up at half time with superb goals from Katie W, Hannah A and Izzy P and in the second half Indie finished off with a great run and a mid-air smash into the goal. Indie grabbed Man of the Match.

Another amazing team performance and what a way to finish the season. Well done everyone.

REWHC Ladies 3rd XI 1
