Play-off drama as Brown birdie sees off Woolerton

Luke Brown produced a birdie three on the final play-off hole to claim victory in Stoneleigh Deer Park’s men’s club championship.

Brown had earlier shot gross scores of 74 and 72 to tie for the lead with Stephen Woolerton (70 & 76).

The two players then ventured back on to the course to play the 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th holes.

The duo were still level going down the 18th fairway, but Brown produced a fine second shot from the right of the green to land three feet from the pin.

Wollerton, whose second landed short of the green, chipped to within two feet of the hole with his third.

However, Brown sunk his putt to claim victory.

The trophy was presented to him by club vice-captan Ken Wykes, whose scores of 62 and 68 gave him the nett prize.

Helen Dellow carded gross scores of 84 and 80 to win the ladies’ championship.

Nicky Woodhouse (80 & 91) was seven shots back in second, while Jan Baines won the trophy for the best nett after shooting a 69 to follow her first-day 68.

Tom Charley was a clear winner of the junior club championship, finishing nine shots clear of Corey McDonagh after carding a gross 71.

Luke Greene was a shot further back in third.

The overall nett winner was James Moriarty, whose handicap has plummeted from 34 to 24.8 after he produced a nett score of 52.

Tom Whitfield (nett 55) was second with Ben Kirby sharing third with Ralph Hiatt after both shot a 63.

The girls’ trophy went to Imogen Holmes (nett 76).

Liz Crowther won the ladies’ President Vase with a return of 31 stableford points at Leamington & County, while the men’s President Vase went to David French who edged out Tony Partridge courtesy of a better back nine after both scored 40 points.

Junior member David Atkin, whose handicap has plummeted from 24 to 13.6 during 2013, led home the juniors with 44 points.

Lee Barber scored 48 points (gross 75) off his 15 handicap to secure the Manor House Cup for handicaps of ten to 18 , with the Rabbit Cup going to 27-handicapper Ernie Skalsky (27pts).
