Successive Midland Combination Division Two defeats had seen Hibs’ promotion hopes all but extinguished.

However, a 20th-minute Calum Yeates strike proved enough to see off visitors Northwood, with Hibs renowned defensive qualities once again to the fore.

“Our organisation and discipline was superb to see the game out and gain a valuable three points,” said Kay.

“That’s eight or nine clean sheets in the league from 22 games which is outstanding.

“Our excellent defensive record has set the foundation this season, with the back four and keeper again top-drawer.

“It’s easy to say it’s down to the back five but the workrate and attitude to not concede goals is superb right through the team.

“We have to continue to win games and see where it takes us.

“Every game at this stage of the season is vitally important and we can now look forward to the Perrywood game with renewed confidence.”

Hibs came racing out of the blocks and had already forced the Northfield keeper into two saves before Yeates opened the scoring, bending in an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box.

Hibs had chances to extend their lead, but both Filippo Mannina and Andy Yeates failed to find the target from inside the six-yard box.

 Two goals in four minutes condemned Kenilworth Town to a 2-1 defeat against Enville in the semi-final of the Vase.

Scott Hennell had earlier put Town ahead.
