Southam go to town on sorry Kenilworth

Southam United manager Luke Fogarty was a happy man on Tuesday night as his side made it three wins out of four in their pre-season programme with an 8-0 demolition of Kenilworth Town at Gypsy Lane.

There were a number of familiar faces in the Town side, including former Saint Oliver Manuel in goal, but they found the visitors too hot to handle right from the start.

Saints went ahead inside 90 seconds, with Neil Stacey picking up a loose ball from a corner and smashing in the opener.

A great save by Manuel denied Josh Cole, but Danny Bartle was on hand to finish off and put Saints two goals up in the eighth minute.

Tom Leaver made it 3-0 with an overhead kick in the 11th and Saints were denied another four minutes later when David Wilson turned a driven cross from John Blunsom into the net only to see the effort ruled out for offside.

Town’s first attack came in the 24th minute when former Saint Stef Jones sent in a dangerous cross, but they went further behind five minutes later when Charlie Neale set up Quentin Townsend to head past Manuel.

Wilson made it five on the stroke of half-time and, despite a raft of changes for the second half, Saints continued to dominate, with two goals from Luke Swinnerton, inset, and another from Connor Brown completing the scoring.

Saints were in action twice the previous week, beating Priors Marston 7-2 on Tuesday before losing 3-2 at Stockton on Friday.

At Priors Marston, a hat-trick from Swinnerton and a Ross Jackson strike gave them a 4-0 half-time lead.

While the home side closed the gap after the interval, two goals from Tunde Ajibade and a converted penalty from new signing Leaver saw Saints to a comfortable victory.

In a keenly contested encounter at Stockton, Saints fell behind within the first 90 seconds, but equalised through Josh Cole in the fifth minute.

Leaver almost gave the visitors the lead, but his free-kick was pushed on to the post and away for a corner.

The lively Bartle made it 2-1 to Saints in the 57th minute, but a scrambled goal from a corner three minutes later brought the home side level.

Luke Cole then settled the match for Stockton with a free-kick from the edge of the box with 20 minutes remaining.

Saints, who entertained Southern League Woodford United in their annual Friendship Cup match last night, play Daventry United at Communications Park on Wednesday (7.45pm).
