Resolute Racing Club reach Birmingham Midweek Floodlit Cup final

RACING Club Warwick will meet Gornal Athletic in the final of the Birmingham Midweek Floodlit Cup after producing a shock 2-0 win at West Midlands Premier Division leaders Black Country Rangers.

Their hosts, who also play at step 6 of the Pyramid, had scored 126 goals in the league alone this season, but bolstered by the addition of defender Marvin Gourlay from Rugby Town and Studley goalkeeper Perry Cox, a resolute Racers could not be breached.

And Racers boss Lee Knight said that despite a 20-yard strike from Leon Thomas and a poacher’s finish from substitute Tyron Smith, it was the shut-out that pleased him the most.

“We went there as underdogs and we knew it would be a tough, tough ask,” said Knight, who is hoping to further strengthen his side with the addition of defender Daniel Morris from tomorrow’s visitors Bartley Green.

“We could have gone and crumbled, but we went completely the other way and were absolutely outstanding.

“We worked our socks off and to keep a clean sheet was massive for us.”

 Racers stumbled to a 3-2 defeat at home to Earlswood Town in the Midland Combination Premier last Saturday.

Ricardo Richards put the under-strength hosts into an early lead, but an Ash Malholtra mistake allowed Earlswood to equalise before the break and the visitors went into a 3-1 lead before Richards added his second the 82nd minute from a Luke Fuller free-kick.
