Kenilworth eventually find a way past handy Gandy

Kenilworth Town defied a fine performance from South Redditch keeper Josh Gandy to get back to winning ways in the Stratford Alliance Division One.

Gandy produced a string of saves before the break to keep the scoreline goalless, denying Alex Shaw, Adam Edwards and Nick Ford from open play and Joe Graham from the penalty spot after the midfielder had failed to get a good connection on his spot-kick.

Shane Brassington and Andy Handley also saw efforts come back off the woodwork and Town were to rue the misses as South Redditch took the lead against the run of play shortly after the interval.

Kenilworth responded well and drew level when Brassington pounced to knock in the rebound after Gandy had made another good save from Edwards.

A second penalty afforded Town the chance to take the lead and, although Matt Lendon saw his first effort saved, he scuffed home the rebound to make it 2-1.

Kenilworth had further chances to make the game safe, but Brassington, Ford and Edwards were all foiled by the inspired South Redditch keeper.

However, two goals proved enough and Town to travel to Badsey Rangers tomorrow, with manager Kev Kingham eyeing a chance to put pressure on their title rivals.

“With first playing third this weekend, and Alveston in second having a Saturday off, this is a really good chance for us to close on the top three,” said Kingham.

Town’s reserves won 2-1 at Badsey-based International, with the impressive Vlad Polak scoring both their goals.
