Further frustration for Southam

Saints’ much-interrupted season shows no sign of getting back on track as they suffered yet more disappointment with both this week’s matches being called off, writes David Hucker.

On Wednesday, what promised to be a keen encounter with Nuneaton Griff fell victim to a waterlogged pitch as the snow that fell in Warwickshire added to the existing high water table at The Pingles.

Last Saturday’s visit to Pelsall Villa always looked doubtful, with the home side’s encounter with Racing Club Warwick having been postponed the weekend before and a pitch inspection called for 10.15am.

The 3-2 win over Blackwood on January 5 is the last Athium Midland Football Combination fixture that Saints played and they still have 19 remaining having, along with Walsall Wood, completed the least number of all the clubs in the division.

Their cause had not been helped by the loss of the derby with Racing Club Warwick scheduled for a week tomorrow due to Racers’ Coventry Telegraph Cup tie, but a late fixture change will now see them visiting second-place Littleton that day.

There was some good news for manager Lee Knibbs and his squad after they picked up the divisional team of the month award for December/January, having won five out of their six fixtures, their solitary defeat coming at the hands of Long Eaton United in the FA Carlsberg Vase.

Weather permitting, Saints are at home to Bolehall Swifts tomorrow (3pm), followed by an away trip to Earlswood Town on Tuesday evening.
