Cubbington call-off frustrates Kingham

Kenilworth Town boss Kev Kingham was left frustrated after last Saturday’s RM Smith Cup tie at Cubbington was postponed with the host club unable to field a team.

“It was obviously really disappointing for us as we’ve got a free weekend straight before another cup match and I wanted us to be in top form for that,” said Kingham.

“Unfortunately it’s worse for Cubbington who seem to be having a really tough time of it at the moment.

“I really feel for them and hope that they can get themselves sorted in order to finish off the season.”

Town entertain Quinton in the semi-final of the Division One Knockout Cup tomorrow and despite their mid-table position, Kingham is taking nothing for granted.

“Quinton beat South Redditch in the last round and are sure to be a strong side, but I’m much happier playing them at home than away.

“We’re going to have to make sure that we’re switched on from the first minute and be big and strong all over the pitch.

“If we do that then we’ll have a chance to play our football as the game goes on and try to take the game to Quinton.”

Town’s reserves, who hold up to six games in hand on some of their Stratford Alliance Division Three rivals, made one of those fixtures up with a 4-3 midweek win over Blockley Sports.

Nickie Hanlon and Adam Edwards put Town 2-0 up but Blockley always looked dangerous on the counter attack and they hit back to lead 3-2.

Town boss Mick Burke was forced into changes and was rewarded with further goals for Hanlon and Edwards and he said the victory epitomised the spirit runing through the club.

“It was a scrappy match but we needed and got the win,” said Burke.

“With players being unavailable through work and injury we had a slightly unusual reserve team and a lot of the players hadn’t played together.

“However, everybody showed the spirit we’ve got in the club and battled hard for each other.

“This let us build a platform that we could go on and win the game from.”
