Byrne’s debut set to be delayed

New signing Arthur Byrne looks set to have to wait for his second Racing Club Warwick debut with manager Lee Knight “90 per cent certain” tomorrow’s Les James Challenge Cup tie at Stretton Eagles (2pm) will fall foul of the weather.

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but I’m 90 per cent certain it won’t be on,” said Knight, who is already making preparations for his side playing Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday until the end of the season as they tackle a fixture backlog. He added: “No footballer in the world can play three games in a week and I’ve already spoken to the reserve manager about taking some fixtures off us.”

With the addition of goalkeeper Byrne, Knight at least has some depth between the sticks, with Ash Malholtra and Tom Farmer also on the books at Townsend Meadow.

Byrne has found opportunities limited at Leamington, but Knight says the keeper, who made three appearances for Racers in 2010, will go straight into his side.

“We’re always on the lookout for Warwick lads and we want as many local lads we can get,” said Knight.

“He will come in as number one and that means we may lose one of our other keepers.”
