Dimmock triumphed at the English and British age-group sprint distance championships at Belvoir Castle and St Neots, which comprised a 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run.

The Kenilworth Masters swimmer followed it up with victory over the Olympic distance at Chester, which featured a 1500m swim in the River Dee, a 40k bike in Wales and a 10k run around the city.

Finally, a storming performance in Liverpool saw the Warwick University Professor of Virology complete his set of golds with an overall time of 2hr 48min (32-minute swim, 1hr 16min bike and 51-minute run).

The successes qualified Dimmock, who only took up triathlons aged 60, for the 2016 European Championships in Lisbon and the World Championships in Mexico.

“I wanted to concentrate on domestic this year,” said Dimmock. “And the times have been good. But we do begin to thin out and it will be good to have a bit of a struggle at World and European level.”
