Dettori is all at Sea on the favourite as Regiment produces a Warwick shock

A bumper crowd turned out on May Bank Holiday Monday and those who followed jockey Paul Hanagan through the afternoon would have gone home happy as the former champion jockey had five winners from his seven rides.

Last Saturday’s themed 70s Party Night featured a Queen tribute band entertaining the crowd after racing but, on the track, it was the £8,000 seven-furlong New Citroen C1 Handicap (Bobis Race) that topped the bill.

Just three went to post and there was a red-hot favourite in Sea Defence, ridden by Frankie Dettrori, who was sent off at odds of 2-7.

Punters were in for a real shock, however, as Sea Defence, held up at the rear, failed to quicken when it mattered and trailed in last of the trio, with the race going to 10-1 shot Regiment, ridden by Tony Hamilton for Yorkshire trainer Richard Fahey.

Dettori had been on the mark earlier when taking the Dine In The 1707 Restaurant Maiden Auction Stakes on board 4-5 favourite Doomah and had also scored on Gatewood at Ascot during the afternoon.

Next Tuesday’s meeting opens with the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Bobis Race) over six furlongs and finishes with the longest race of the evening, the rewards4racing.com Handicap over one-and-three-quarter miles, which will start in front of the stands.

The feature race is the third, the class 4 Dine In The 1707 Restaurant Handicap.

Residents living within the CV34 postcode can gain admission for £5 on proof of address and children aged 17 and under are admitted free.

Gates open two hours before racing at 4.15pm and there is ample free parking in the centre of the course.

Tickets are already going fast for the popular Ladies’ Day meeting on Friday July 4.

As well as limited places remaining in the 1707 Restaurant with views over the course, the ‘Ladies Who Lunch’ package looks like being a sell-out again.

This year, Channel 4 presenter Emma Spencer will host the occasion, which costs £75 and includes lunch, afternoon tea and prime seats for the fashion show.

“Ticket sales are rocketing and the advice is to book soon if you want to get a table,” said operations manager Melissa Stark.
