Last-day loss of little consequence as Leamington are already down

Leamington’s long battle against relegation from Birmingham League Division One ended in disappointment on Saturday when they went down to a 69-run defeat at Malvern-based Barnards Green.

Green batted first and were indebted to a quick-fire 75 from captain Andy Ford as they made a solid start.

Leamington’s bowlers plugged away and a middle-order wobble saw Green faltering at 138 for six.

However, Jonathan Dovey led spirited late order resistance, his 33 allowing Green to close on a challenging 231 for nine.

For Leamington, Grant Thornton and Darrel Williams bowled impressively, each taking three wickets.

Leamington lost two cheap wickets in reply and were always behind the clock.

Mark Best made 28 and David Bailey 24, but only Lee Hopkins with 49 was able to master Green’s steady bowling.

He was ninth man out and Leamington were dismissed soon after for 162 with almost seven overs to spare.

For Green, Alex Hepburn took two for 23 in an excellent spell, supported by three for 38 for Dovey.

Leamington’s defeat proved of little consequence as Moseley eased to victory against Brewood, ensuring Leamington’s fate was not in their own hands.

Leamington’s second string made it five Premier Division wins in a row, with a seven-wicket success over eight-man Shrewsbury.

The Shropshire side batted first and owed much to Tom Cox, whose 82 was the backbone of their total of 173 all out.

Leamington’s bowling had the air of end of season casualness, with only two for 18 from Paul Lawrence of any note.

Leamington’s batters were able to find the many gaps in the field against their depleted opponents and cantered to an easy victory.

David Hawkes paved the way with 62, allowing Jack Bewick (24 not out) and Jake Salmon (50 not out off 28 balls) to see Leamington home with 15 overs to spare.
