Burghley struggles leave Amos wise after the event

Amos and Wise Crack were in a strong position after the dressage as they scored 43.9 to put them in 17th going into Saturday’s cross-country.

But on a reversed Captain Mark Phillips course the pair slipped down the rankings and went into Sunday’s finale in 38th.

Five faults in the showjumping put paid to any hopes of climbing the table as they finished the event in 43rd – Germany’s Michael Jung taking victory for the first time.

“It’s a fantastic event to come to and it’s been a great week, there’s a touch of disappointment that we couldn’t jump better but I’m trying to keep a smile,” said Amos.

“He’s a brilliant horse and I think we have this experience to help us so we can come back stronger next year.

“There were quite a few faults there, a few too many to be honest and that’s a shame but he worked hard in the cross country so was probably a bit tired today.”

The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials is one of six four-star events in the world and sees the best riders from across the globe descend on Lincolnshire to strut their stuff.

And Amos says it was a great experience for Wise Crack to mix it with the best and is hoping the pair can learn from their time at Burghley.

“He is a nervous horse and he is a bit introverted in there and you can feel that he is holding his breath a little bit,” she added.

“I think that time when he’s about to go up he’s holding his breath, we would have liked a tad more but it’s been good.

“Hopefully we can learn from this and come back stronger next year and then we will see what we can do from there.”
