Midlands title for Williams but Quartermaine is out

Quartermaine suffered a controversial points defeat to Hall Green’s Tommy Collins, while Williams’ opponent Joe Ireland (Meir ABC) was disqualified following their bout for wearing the incorrect hand bandages.

Williams would have got the decision anyway, despite battling a heavy cold, but coach Edwin Cleary said the youngster “made a loads of mistakes” in his first taste of three three-minute rounds.

Quartermaine, meanwhile, was on the wrong end of a points decision, with Cleary feeling his charge got dealt with harshly by the referee.

“I thought Danny won,” he said.

“Collins was holding and spoiling but the ref saw it as both lads holding.

“At the start of the second the ref pulled both lads together and told them he would start taking points off if they carried on.

“Danny had a point taken off him in round two and Collins was warned another four times but no point was taken off him.”

Seventeen-year-old Quartermaine could get a quickfire chance for revenge if he beats holder Macauley Owen in their Youth Central England Lightweight Elite title fight on March 7, with Collins the first mandatory challenger.

Away from the championships, 13-year-old Morgan Ensell made quite an impression on her skills debut against highly rated Simran Kaur (Merridale ABC), with her performance gaining her an invite to an England Boxing Open Talent Day on February 15.

Two Cleary’s boxers are competing the British Universities & Colleges Sport Championships this weekend.

Jack Johnston-Smith from Warwick and Kenilworth’s Michael Hazelworth both trained at the Wise Street gym over the summer before returning to their respective universities.
