ICEBOUND airports may have dominated the headlines, but this week’s snow inspired many readers to head outside with their cameras – and some to reach for their Father Christmas costumes.

No sooner had school broken up than the first flakes floated down, and Saturday’s flurry made the perfect start to the holidays for anyone young enough not to have to worry about a job.

Snowploughs and gritters hit the roads, but parks and gardens were transformed and one set of mountain bikers decided to go for a seasonal look when they headed out onto the white stuff on Saturday.

Warwick’s Victorian evening was a few weeks a go but the town’s last market before Christmas had the dusting it needed to make it look truly Dickensian.

In Sydenham, Amroth Mews resident Nigel Briggs got a shock when he went to check his thermometer on Sunday morning. He said: “On Saturday night in our back garden at Sydenham the temperature went down to minus 16 degrees centigrade. Did anyone beat this?”
