Warwick grandmother braves shave in support of her daughter’s cancer battle

A Warwick grandmother has gone all out to support her daughter through terminal cancer after pledging to join a friend and have her head completely shaved.

Susan Moroney and Linda March decided to “brave the shave” on Thursday to help raise funds for the Aylesford Unit and increase awareness of the ways cancer can affect families.

Sue’s daughter Shelly has been undergoing extensive chemotherapy treatment at the hospital since February when she was diagnosed with bowel and secondary liver and lung cancers.

Sue, who has five children, gave up work to help her 40-year-old daughter through treatment and now wants to do something amazing to show solidarity and thank the “amazing medical team” at the cancer unit where Shelly is treated each week.

Sue said: “Shelly is going through a lot of treatment.

“Her condition has been classed as terminal though the chemotherapy is making a visible difference to the cancer. The doctors are all so proud of how well she is responding.

“She restarts treatment on the day we have the shave. It has been a very tough six months so we just want to do everything we can.

“The unit does not get enough recognition for and we want to change that.”

The 60-year-old grandmother of 16 said the head shave started out as a joke but soon turned serious once she realised how much she could do for others in need.

“I’d never have dreamt of doing anything like this before, but hopefully it will raise money and show what cancer sufferers face,” she said.

She will be joining her best friend, Linda who lives in nearby St Michael’s Road.

Linda, 65, saw her mother go through breast cancer and said as well as seeing the effects it has on a family, she knows the personal impact cancer can have.

The pair will have their locks chopped by Shelly’s brother Jordon, who is a trainee barber at Razors Barbers Shop in Leamington.

Their efforts have already raised £800 and the friends are hoping to pull in more donations once they show off their newly bald heads.

Shelly, a mother of three boys, who is growing her hair back after much of it was lost through her treatment, was there to support the efforts.
