Warwick Castle told it can carry on camping

Despite some objections about night-time noise levels last year, Warwick District Council has granted planning consent for more medieval-style tents to be put up between May 17 and September 1.

The 41 round tents will occupy 2.15 hectares of land on the western banks of the Avon in an area known as Foxes Study.

Cllr Glenn Williams (Con, Warwick North) said planning consent had been restricted to one year only so that noise and any other nuisance levels could be monitored.

Cllr Williams said: “As a result of some complaints from people living near the castle last year, the site has been changed and we have granted permission for just the five months requested.

“Local residents accept that there is noise during the day as thousands of visitors arrive at the castle but they were used to it being quiet in the evening.

“However, there is evidence that 30 per of those who camped last year did go into the town to spend their money in shops and restaurants.”

Merlin Entertainments, which owns the Grade I listed castle, has relocated the camp site which will be well screened from the castle itself.

Castle manager Geoff Spooner said: “We’re delighted that we can go ahead with an improved and extended Glamping Village this year. With a total of 41 luxurious tents set by the River Avon, the site is considerately located in the heart of the grounds.”
