Video: Chris White welcomes victory amid Tory gains

The Conservative MP was announced as winner of the seat with 24,249 votes on Friday afternoon after an anxious wait through the day.

Mr White beat Labour candidate, Lynnette Kelly who came out in second place with 17,643 votes in Thursday’s election amid major Conservative gains across the country.

Speaking about the victory both locally and nationally, he said it was a “great result” and unexpected success for the party to secure a majority government.

Speaking at Stoneleigh Park after the results were announced just after 2pm, he said: “I am absolutely thrilled with this result.

“We have put in a tremendous amount of effort and come away with an absolutely positive message all round.

“It wasn’t just what we did through the campaign, but what we have done with charities and businesses and residents year in year out.

“It is an unbelievable honour to have the opportunity to support Warwick and Leamington for another five years.

“I have an amazing team behind me and they have all done tremendously well.”

UKIP won 4,183 votes, with Liberal Democrats securing 2,512 and the Green Party with 1,994.

Mr White was elected for the first time in 2010 where he received 20,876 votes to Labour’s James Plaskitt’s 17,363 - winning by a margin of 3,513.
