Vaccinations for children of travellers

TRAVELLERS have again made an illegal encampment in a south Leamington industrial estate.

A group of four caravans and other vehicles arrived in Delphi Close, off Tachbrook Park Drive, late on Monday.

The group is on highway land, which is the responsibility of Warwickshire County Council.

Speaking on Wednesday, the council’s gypsy and traveller liaison officer Rob Leahy said children of the travellers needed vaccinations before the group could be moved on. He added the authority would begin legal steps to evict the travellers later that day.

Mr Leahy said: “We have a duty of care to the travellers but we also have a duty of care to residents. As this is a place travellers often visit our policy is that we will try to move them on as quickly as possible.”

A Warwickshire Police spokeswoman said officers had become aware of the encampment late on Monday.

A previous encampment was moved on in June but left refuse behind. Warwick District Council officials are due to put proposals for a dedicated transit site to councillors in the autumn.
