Unconscious man pulled from canal by jogger

The man in his 40s was not breathing when he was rescued from the water near Althorpe Street at around 7pm.

He was spotted by a passing jogger who called for emergency services after pulling the man onto the towpath.

Ambulance crews and an air ambulance arrived and the casualty was resuscitated before being taken to hospital where his condition was described as “critical”.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “A man out jogging spotted the man floating in the canal and called 999.

“The Good Samaritan managed to pull the man out of the water just before medics arrived.

“The man, believed to be in his 40s, was not breathing and immediately paramedics started carrying out advanced life support.

“CPR continued and after a short time the man started to make respiratory effort.

“Due to the patients serious condition the man was anaesthetised at the scene before being transferred to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further emergency treatment.

“Unfortunately, the man’s condition was described as critical.

“Thanks to the passer-by’s actions of rescuing the man from the canal, medics were able to resuscitate him and give him the best possible chance of survival.”
