Top sports team picks Warwick

Warwick School's under-18s rugby team: the school is hoping that more boys will be inspired to take up and improve their skills in the sport now that the school has been selected to host the Japanese team during next year's Rugby World Cup. Picture by James Ainsworth.

Some 90 bids from across England and Wales were made to accommodate overseas competitiors. Warwick learnt this week it was one of 41 to be successful.

Mark Nasey, who is in charge of rugby at the school, said: “This is the third largest sporting event in the world - we are delighted to be part of Rugby World Cup 2015.

“Rugby is hugely popular and successful at the school and we hope being part of RWC 2015 will further inspire our students - we also hope to make the community feel a real part of the tournament.”

Other international teams will be based in a mixture of rugby and football clubs, schools, colleges, universities and dedicated training facilities.

Brighton will also help host some of the Japanese players whose coach, Eddie Jones, said: “With just over one year to go until the tournament, the coundown really is on and we are looking forward to staying at Warwick School and at Brighton College.”

Twenty teams will be competing to win the title and so the outdoor pitches, indoor facilities and swimming pool at Warwick should be of immense training value.

England Rugby 2015 chief executive Debbie Jevans said: “With a wide range of excellent facilities and locations secured the teams can be assured of having all their training needs met whilst allowing us to spread the reach of the tournament even further.”
