Splash out for Swimathon 2011

THE Soroptomist Swimathon will return next month and is aiming to raise more money for charity than ever before.

The 14th annual event will be held at Warwick School’s swimming pool on Sunday October 16 with teams swimming in relay for 55 minutes.

Over the past 13 years the swimathon has raised more than £134,000 for local charities, and this year the chosen charities are Myton hospice and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.

Leamington Amateur Swimming Association are veterans of the event, having entered teams since its inception. They have again thrown their goggles into the pool, and will be bringing five or six teams who, as usual, will lead from the front. They are often seen battling with their Kenilworth counterparts for the swimathon trophies which are given for the largest amount raised, and the number of laps swum by the team.

Swimathon coordinator Gillian Ingham is encouraging people to sign up and said: “It has been a bit slow so far, we are up to about 25 teams at the moment, and we hope to round a few more up.”
