Spate of bicycle thefts from Leamington station

POLICE have urged cyclists using Leamington station to ensure their bikes are secure after a spate of thefts.

Four cycles have been stolen from the station since July 9 and officers have stepped up patrols, but say cyclists can help protect their bikes.

Pcso Hayley Jones said: “We regularly hold workshops where we provide crime reduction advice to rail passengers who cycle to and from stations. During the workshops we noticed that some people still leave their bikes unsecured. Other cyclists don’t always use adequate locks or secure vulnerable parts such as quick release wheels, which can prove an easy steal.”

PCSO Jones advised cyclists to lock their bikes with two good quality locks to secure both frame and wheels, leave it in a busy, well-lit and CCTV-covered area, ensure it is property marked and fitted with an electronic tracing system or tag, insure it and keep a photograph and note of the frame number.

l Witnesses to thefts should call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting incident number B2/WWA of August 8.
