RSC spot talent in Leamington schoolboy

Theatre critics from the likes of the Guardian were so impressed by a 12-year-old Leamington schoolboy’s performances in a professional Shakespeare production that they gave him a standing ovation.

And impressively, George David’s role as Young Lucius in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s current production of Titus Andronicus is his third with the company.

The North Leamington pupil, who also stars as Ruairi Donovan in The Archers on Radio 4, is acting in 39 performances during the six-month-long run of the play, which is on at the RSC Theatre in Stratford.

His mum Jennie, who drives him to and from Leamington to Stratford several nights a week, said: “Acting is in his blood and he loves acting with the RSC - it’s his passion.

“His lines are very Shakespearean, but he has a good mind for that. He’s like a sponge.”

George, who came across the opportunity to audition for the part through his involvement with Warwick’s Playbox Theatre, also acted in the RSC’s Richard III in 2011 and The Merry Wives of Windsor last year - and this year’s role requires him to be on stage for the whole of the play’s second half.

An RSC chaperone travelled made many train journeys with him to London for what Mrs David describes as a “gruelling” rehearsal schedule before the play run began.

She said: “We are very proud of him. There is nothing like seeing him on stage.

“He is meeting a lot of famous actors, which is really good for him.”

George is hoping to get a place at the Birmingham Ormiston Academy for the performing arts next year and he has sent off an audition video to act in a new Paddington Bear film, to be released in 2014.

George will be in tonight’s (Friday) performance of Titus Andronicus, and will continue acting in the play until it closes in October. To buy tickets, call 0844 800 1110 or visit www.rsc.org.uk
