Red Lion pub is open for business as usual despite Hunningham bridge closure, says manager.

Richard Merand, general manager of the Red Lion in Hunningham, has said that footfall has been cut by half compared to last year after the 14th century bridge over the River Leam was closed by Warwickshire County Council in August for “urgent” repairs due to damage caused by two separate accidents.

The repairs are not due to be completed until November 22 said, Mr Merand is concerned about the continued loss of custom between now and then.

He said: “Most people who come here do so by car, we’re not close to a lot of people so having the road closed from one direction is serious.

“At this time of the year we would normally be getting double the number of customers through our doors.

“Looking at the business from last year, should be doing better than this.”

The large 17th century pub, a popular spot for walkers, had a massive refurbishment after it was flooded several years ago.

Mr Merand became its general manager in January after its ownership had changed hands a couple of times in recent years.

He said the forthcoming events which could be affected will include the monthly comedy club, screenings of Rugby World Cup games with a planned outdoor screen, a Halloween Party, and a Bonfire Night event.

The road is blocked to cars coming from the direction of Weston-Under-Wetherley but motorists coming from the direction of Offchurch can still drive in and use the car park as normally.
