A good read and someone to listen to you

A SERVICE which takes books, audio books, music and jigsaws to people in rural locations who have difficulty getting to branch and mobile libraries is encouraging more people to make use of it.

Staff at Kenilworth Library consult users who gives them an idea of the books that they enjoy and selections are tailored around that.

Volunteers, in a partnership with Age UK, then visit them every four weeks with the items.

Margaret Thorn, of Hampton Magna, has been receiving the service for four years and looks forward to receiving the mysteries and audio books, as well as a chance to catch up with volunteers Frances Wilmot and Ann Turner.

She said: “This is an excellent service. It keeps me in contact with the outside world which can be difficult and the books are always great to have.”

Frances, a former librarian, has been volunteering since retirement and loves the chance to visit people and keep them in contact.

Her route also takes in Lapworth, Rowington, Haseley and Hatton and she would welcome other clients. Although the service is not just about books – many of the people visited love the chance to have a chat and the volunteers can also help make arrangements for other problems their customers might have.

Frances said: “It’s very rewarding to feel you have helped someone a little – not only with books but getting help with their problems.”
