School in Leamington praised for its pastoral care to pupils and staff

The Kingsley School says it prides itself in supporting children’s emotional and social wellbeing

The Kingsley School in Leamington has been awarded The Wellbeing Award for Schools, 'highlighting the excellent pastoral care' it offers to pupils and staff.

Provided by Optimus Education, the Wellbeing Award for Schools recognises the work that goes into the wellbeing of the school community, and in promoting the understanding about mental health issues to reduce the stigma surrounding them in wider society.

The award, developed in partnership with National Children’s Bureau (NCB), focuses on ensuring that practices and provisions are in place to support and promote emotional wellbeing and mental health.

The award’s aim is to change the long-term culture of schools, embedding an ethos where mental health and wellbeing is regarded as the responsibility for all.

The awarding process involved all of the school community - pupils, parents, staff and governors - along with a virtual wellbeing focussed tour of the school. The school excelled in all nine areas of the criteria.

The assessors highlighted initiatives such as a whole-day virtual Wellbeing Festival during lockdown, allowing pupils and staff to participate in a range of activities, the timetabled Enrichment Programme, the ‘Pastoral Hub’ and Mental Health Champions, and reminders of positivity and encouragement.

Also mentioned were the notable emphasis on healthy eating and fitness, and the work of the school’s full-time school nurse and wellbeing counsellor, along with the very popular therapy dog, Scooby.

Acting headteacher, Christina McCullough, said: “The Kingsley School has long been renowned for its pastoral care and inclusive ethos; we pride ourselves on supporting children’s emotional and social wellbeing and have always felt that these elements should sit at the heart of life in our school.

"Receiving this award is not only a true celebration and validation of our community and ethos, but it empowers us to continue to develop our provision and support in an ever-more challenging world.”
