We must stand firm for the future

On behalf of the ordinary residents of Leamington may I say a big ‘thank you’ to those councillors who listened to their electorate, considered the current state of the economy and the inexorable rise in online shopping, and voted to refuse planning permission for the enormous white elephant that would be Clarendon Arcade.

Two weeks ago the Courier pointed out the stark reality of the proposal saying ‘conservation groups, history groups and many residents have campaigned against the scheme, but many shops and businesses support it’.

Before launching the inevitable version two, those supporting the scheme would do well to remember that success for their business is reliant upon those very people whom they are alienating.

To the councillors I say stand your ground and keep your nerve when this proposal to swallow our roads and concrete over our open space is resubmitted. It must not proceed. - Anne Piper, via email.
