War memorial will be completely renovated

IN raising concern at the appearance of the War Memorial, your correspondent (Postbag, last week) would not have been aware that this much cherished part of our heritage is to be completely renovated.

The town council has been successful in obtaining a grant from the War Memorials Trust to undertake the cleaning of the stone obelisk and plinths and the introduction of a paved area to accommodate newly laid slabs at ground level. The remainder of the area surrounding the memorial will be returned to turf.

The order for this work has been placed with a view to commencement in th new year.
