Town would be poorer without it

Which axe is Mr Beattie grinding in a letter that exhibits more rasp than illuminating spark (Courier last week)?

He describes the Leamington Society as a ‘bubble”. Mr Beattie seems more concerned to have a go at the society than address the problems faced by our town. I’ve lived in Leamington long enough to know that the townscape would all be the poorer without the society.

Who worked with Chiltern Trains to improve the waiting room at the station? Who did I see yesterday working on the station garden as my train pulled into town? Who projected the plans and raised the money to save the Jubilee Arches? Who is working tirelessly to restore the Bandstand? Who calls big developers to account?

The answer in all these cases, and in others, is the Leamington Society. Yes, I’m a member of the society. I value its contribution to Leamington. Were it not for the society, public debate about substantive issues of local planning, conservation and development would most certainly be less well informed than it is.

I don’t always agree with the society’s position. But it is the Leamington Society that pricks the ‘bubbles’ that do float around our town. It is the Leamington Society that ensures the big issues are publicly heard and rationally debated in the pages of The Courier and elsewhere. Bubble indeed!
