Money buys time but solution is needed

The decision by the town council to support Lillington library in the short term is the right approach. The proposal to keep the library open for an extra three hours a week was described as “not being a huge amount of money”.

In terms of the county council’s library service budget, this grant is small change. On the other hand, £4,375 is a substantial proportion of the town council’s social cohesion fund. The purpose of this fund is to support modest programmes and initiatives that will give support to localities in the town; it is not intended to fill gaps in the county council’s programme of cuts imposed from central government. By supporting the library for a short period, it will allow breathing space for other sources of funding to be sought.

Or is this an opportunity for the much heralded ‘big society” to show its metal? We shall see!

We all want to find ways to protect our services from the cuts. The town council’s very small social cohesion fund is not the way to do it. - Cllr Jerry Weber (Lab), Leamington Clarendon
