Make the most of south of the river

As a local businesswoman who has recently opened a new shop in the Old Town, I welcome unreservedly the refusal of planning permission for the proposed Clarendon Arcade shopping centre.

We should be making the most of what we have south of the river - an abundance of empty units at affordable rents - rather than investing in an unimaginative and uninspiring mall. Boutique destination shopping is what attracts people to Leamington – they come here to find something different and unique in interesting, independent outlets - not what they can find elsewhere.

Despite the economic downturn, in the six weeks since launching ‘Willow’, takings are up by a third week on week whilst customer numbers have increased five-fold over the same period. There has never been a better time to open as far as I’m concerned. The advantage of lower overheads is a benefit I can pass directly onto my customers- a huge bonus this Christmas when many people are struggling.

This is an exciting location with a vibrant community just waiting for new businesses to come and share in its regeneration. I would urge anyone, who like me has dreamt of opening their own shop, to seize the day and join in the High Street renaissance. - Karen Robison, Willow, High Street, Leamington.
