Lucky to have such a man in charge

With reference to the complaint directed at Glen Burley, chief exective of South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust (Postbag last week).

Let me first of all commend the hard work and dedication put in by this man during his period as chief executive. We can all recall only a few years ago when our own Warwick Hospital was in fear of closure due to spiralling debt. Then it was suggested possibly we locally would all have to be treated either at University Hospital, Coventry, or maybe further afield at George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton.

In came Glen Burley as chief executive following a succession of chief executives, none of who made the financial position any better and staff morale was very low. Through his vast experience and pleasant character, Glen steered us through bad times, getting the debt under control and tackling the serious problem of serious hospital infections, both of which under his direction are greatly improved.

I have had over 50 years involvement one way or another with Warwick Hospital and have no doubt in saying he is the best chief executive we have ever had at Warwick. He is always willing to listen to anyone from staff to patients to board of directors and I know he would take criticism seriously if it was constructive, but would obviously be hurt by criticism of his position.

We are so lucky to have a man in this position who takes his job very seriously and pledged on appointment he was there for the duration to keep Warwick open.

Please follow his work pattern and see all the good work he does, speak to the staff about the different atmosphere he has created and and the morale of a once low nature.

Long may you remain at Warwick gen and thanks from all who remain loyal to our great Warwick Hospital. - David Bradshaw, address supplied.
