Help shape future of the Common

It was gratifying to read the ‘good news’ on page 5 of the Warwick Courier last week, that Warwick District Council will now set up a working party to look at the future of the district’s precious asset, the recreation area of St Mary’s Lands.

That decision seems to be a much more equitable approach than a strategy only based on the input from one tenant, Warwick Racecourse.

Also, the fact that it will be district and town councillors who will examine all the facts bodes well as they can assimilate the aspirations and ideas of all “stakeholders”, including existing tenants as well as the main users of the old Common, the people of Warwick district and the visitors to the area.

So, people of Warwick district, please have your say in the future of St Mary’s Lands. If you use the Common for recreation, dog-walking, jogging, flying model planes, golf, bird watching, etc, please let your views be known or have a spokesperson from your group to provide information the those who will produce the final “strategy” for full consultation.

The working group can only make recommendations on the information they have, so please be prepared to help by telling your local councillors, or Warwick District Council, or even by a letter to the Courier, on how you would wish to see the area used. Our Common has been around for about 800 years. Please give the working party all the help you can to shape its future so it can continue to be of lasting benefit to all residents of the district.
