Extraordinary idea of what is a priority

If the application had been for such an establishment to be granted a licence in Regent Street, the Parade or Warwick Street, it would more than likely have been refused. South Leamington ? No problem.

On page 3 of last week’s ‘Courier’ is a report about the council requiring the licensee of the ‘Queen Victoria’ pub in High Street to remove the image of the Queen from their pub sign and to repaint the outside of the building. The reason given is that it is a Grade II listed building in a conservation area.

Strange how there are so many grotty, empty shops along the High Street obviously not spoiling the appearence of the ‘conservation area’.

Strange how a couple of doors along from the pub is a derelict building, empty for years, which presumably is not detracting from the glorious ‘conservation area’.

Strange how the wonderful ‘conservation area’ is able to tolerate all this and now a lapdancing club but not a pub sign of Queen Victoria and some smart red paint.

Some people somewhere in the council have an extraordinary idea of what’s important and what should be a priority. The tiny little group of councillors who voted for this club licence should hang their heads in shame for having the brass neck to take council taxpayers’ hard-earned money by way of allowances for ignoring local residents’ views on this matter.

The councillors responsible should be contacted very regularly by local residents by phone and by email to ensure they know just how angry people feel at their elected representatives treating them like something you step in when you’re not looking where you’re going! - R Grenville, via email.
