Enough Royal tributes already

I read, with incredulity, of the proposal to erect a nine-metre high ‘plinth’ at the top of the Parade to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. There are already several ‘tributes’ to and a statue of, members of the British Royal Family, past and present, in Leamington.

The name of the town is ‘Royal’ Leamington Spa, for goodness sake. Why, oh why do we now need a pointless nine-metre high phallic symbol, the only effect of which will be to give the pigeons something new to dive-bomb.

If there are a group of people in the town who are really determined to visibly celebrate our servility to an unelected ‘Royal’ House then perhaps a far more positive and useful thing to do might be to create a Jubilee Garden in an appropriate place.

That would at least have the benefit of giving people somewhere to sit and relax in rather than getting neck ache gawping at a pointless plinth! - R Grenville, via email.
