Court case should not have taken place

I wish to take issue with your correspondent J E S Bradshaw in the Courier last week. I applaud Chief Fire Officer, Graeme Smith for standing by his firefighters in the manslaughter court case, which should never have taken place.

Whilst, I agree there should have been an inquiry and investigation into the deaths of these firefighters, but at a cost of £4.6million, I don’t think so, especially as no jury in this land would find these firefighters guilty for just doing their job.

The prosecution was based solely on the evidence of one so called expert who retired from the fire service in 1994, and most of his evidence could have been pulled apart by the majority of serving and retired firefighters.

If these firefighters had been found guilty, it could have changed the face of firefighting throughout the country. So God forbid if J E S Bradshaw had a fire at their home - a fire appliance would turn up and squirt a bit of water though the window and hope for the best, as no incident commander would commit a crew through fear of prosecution if things went wrong.

I hope this incident can now be put to rest and the families of the four firefighters who lost their lives, and the families of the three firefighters who faced manslaughter charges can get on with their lives. - Graham Rutter, Bankfield Drive, Leamington.
