Offchurch is looking back to the 50s for big celebration

The Woven Threads project, lead by artist Michaela McMillan, will involve the whole community in creating a 1950s-inspired art installation on the village green.

The work will reflect people’s memories and ideas of the decade in which the Queen’s ascension to the throne and coronation took place.

Ms McMillan said: “This is a great opportunity to include the whole community’s ideas in a diverse artwork to try out different techniques, learn some new skills and have fun in creating a unique centrepiece for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.”

A series of artist-led workshops to design and create the installation, open to villagers of all ages, will take place between now and May.

The project, funded by the Arts on our Doorstep programme, was paunched last month with a 1950s tea part at the village hall.

Villagers were encouraged to bring along any 1950s memorabilia and to discuss their ideas, stories and impressions of the decade while finding out more details about the project.

The hall was decorated with images from the 1950s and tea was served on vintage china.

The completed artwork will be unveiled during the village’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Friday June 1 and it will remain in place and available to view during the Warwickshire Open Studios event in July.

Arts on our Doorstep is a project which bring arts to rural communities in Warwick district and Rugby Borough.
