Modest ‘£600’ painting sells for £11,000 at auction

AN unidentified oil painting that was expected to go for £600 was sold for more than £11,000 after a well-known signature was found hidden in the corner.

Experts found a monogram in the bottom right hand corner which was faint and difficult to read until, through the wonders of modern technology, it was revealed as the mark of Edwin Douglas, the late 19th century British artist known mostly for his paintings of dogs.

A re-estimate of £10,000-£15,000 was then published online and the picture was eventually sold for £11,400 at the first of Locke and England’s bi-monthly antique sales for 2012 in Guy Street, Leamington.
