He said: “I qualified when I was 18 and then building on contacts I’d made while working for my dad, I set up on my own a year later.

“I pride myself on being reliable and approachable and having a clean image for customers, as developing personal relationships leads to the word of mouth recommendations that keep work coming in.

“I’m incredibly proud to have my own thriving business at this age and think that says a lot for the service I give my customers.”

At the judging day, Mr McCluskey was called upon to chat with the judging panel as well as face the camera for test shots.

Mr McCluskey said: “With so many entries to the competition, even making the final of Get Geared Up is an honour.

“I’m just crossing my fingers that I impressed the judges.”

John Mewett, marketing director for Screwfix, said: “At Screwfix we meet hundreds of tradesmen every day in our trade counters and we understand that presenting the right image is crucial for securing work and doing the job to the highest standard while staying safe – so our Geared Up range is all about helping tradesmen stay smart and safe.

“Feedback from our trade panel has suggested that our customers want to see real men in our work wear catalogues, not models.

“So in its first year, our Get Geared Up competition was all about responding to that need.

“Robert and all the finalists demonstrated a real awareness of the importance of professional work wear and it’s certainly no easy task to pick the winner.”
