‘Life-changing’ trip to Uganda for Kineton students

Kineton High School pupils Isobelle Dick, Luke Clay and Phillip Tompkins were the first young people from Warwickshire to be invited to the event, which took place at the Discovery Centre in Jinja.

The three-day event involved 21 young people from the UK and Uganda, who took part in debates on a number of issues, including conflict and resolution, sustainable development, the internet and its impact on society and global citizenship.

The youngsters also helped out with chores at the centre and took part in leisure activities, including visiting a chimpanzee orphanage and a women’s cooperative whose jewellery business is funding the school in Jinja.

Isobelle said: “Going to Uganda was a life-changing experience. I have made friends for life and have memories that I will never forget.

“We all felt so welcomed into the community and were ready to try anything new, from the food to African dancing. The week was unforgettable and has made me want to return to Africa to volunteer, either with a school or in the community.”
