League tables show across the board improvement

WARWICKSHIRE pupils’ exam results improved last year for the fourth year running, annual performance tables have shown.

The key stage 4 performance table, published by the Department for Education yesterday (Thursday), shows that around 6,000 of the pupils who sat GCSE exams in the summer and about 3,600, or 62 per cent, achieved five or more grades of A* to C or equivalent including in English and Maths.

This is a rise of about two per cent on 2010.

The proportion of pupils reaching this level has risen consistently in recent years with only 48 per cent of pupils achieving this result in 2007.

Cllr Heather Timms, the Warwickshire County Councillor responsible for policy on Children, Young People and Families, said: “These results are the product of more than 11 years of learning by these pupils and teaching by their teachers throughout their primary and secondary school years, and they should all be proud of their success.”

In Warwick district Arnold Lodge and Warwick School, whose pupils had not taken GCSE exams until last year, had rates of 93 and 95 per cent respectively.

Aylesford’s 53 per cent rate in 2009 rose to 64 per cent in 2010 and was 58 per cent last year.

Campion has improved from 34 per cent two years ago to 52 per cent this time around.

The average points score per level 3 examination entry was 215 points, two points higher than last year, which puts the average grade for A-level and equivalent examinations at just above a grade C.

Cllr Timms added: These results are about much more than GCSEs and A levels. Last year there were around 14,000 16 to 19-year-old students in Warwickshire schools and colleges, and many have gained successful results in a range of vocationally related qualifications, including BTECs and National Vocational Qualifications.”

At Aylesford, 74 per cent of key stage 5 students achieved three or more A-levels at grades from A* to E or equivalent.

Almost 70 per cent of Campion School pupils achieved this level while 97 per cent of Kenilworth, 96 per cent of Kineton, 96 per cent of King’s High and 94 per cent of Kingsley pupils also fit into this category.
