Kineton charity that performs miracles needs one of its own to continue

A KINETON mother who has given up her life in the UK to run a charity that supports poor communities in South America is desperately appealing for help to keep it going.

After retiring nine years ago, Rosalind Grant boarded a plane for Argentina and has since spent most of her time there, single-handedly driving projects funded by her charity, Compassion Direct UK (CDUK).

Recent efforts on behalf of Ms Grant and her volunteers has enabled a rural primary school to provide clean drinking water for children from a well funded by the charity and a women and child development centre has been built for another small and impoverished community.

But, because she has not help with tasks such as applying for grants, Ms Grant - a volunteer herself - is finding that the cause is running out of money and, unless significant funds are forthcoming in the next few months, the charity will not be able to pay for its public liability insurance and membership of the Fundraising Standards Board - meaning it will be forced to close down in March.

Ms Grant said: “If only people will come forward and chat to me, I can always find something, no matter how little time they might have, for ways they can help.

“We desperately need people to make standing orders - even for as little as £5 a month, as these can help us to work our small miracles.”

While Ms Grant is confident that CDUK’s existing projects will be managed by the people they are helping, she said: “We never work with projects unless we know that we are able to deliver this sustainability and independence - this is why we are unable to support any further projects. due to our lack of funding.

“Despite public UK appeals, we have recieved insufficient funds to accumulate enough money to be able to work on or fund any new projects. But we have several projects on our files for which we require funding.”

Yet Ms Grant remains hopeful that the charity can be saved. She said: “At the moment my life is in limbo while I wait and hope for more public support.

“Being a positive person and because I have faith in the generosity of the British people, I cannot and will not believe that they will allow the last nine years of my retired life’s work to come to an end.

“I may have to return to the UK if the charity fails, but refuse to think that far ahead yet.”
