Gold lamé and tinsel in Whitnash

TORRENTIAL rain almost washed out Whitnash’s Christmas lights switch-on on Sunday.

But after a delayed start the skies cleared and hundreds turned out to enjoy live music, fairground rides and charity stalls in the lead up to the lights being turned on.

Leading the countdown was junior Elvis impersonator Little Elvis Sylvain, who sang twice.

In another hightlight, Plough and Harron pub landlord Jason Giles was ‘arrested’ and hauled onstage, where he had his head shaved in aid of forces charity Help for Heroes.

Cllr Simon Button, chairman of the Christmas lights committee, said: “Considering the conditions the atmosphere was brilliant. The crowds turned out and we had at least 165 children visit Father Christmas.

“I’m always astounded by the community spirit in Whitnash. People could have stayed nice and warm in their houses but they put their coats on and came out.”
