Specialist cutting equipment was used to free the casualties and three ambulances, an emergency care practitioner and a senior paramedic officer attended the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival at the scene, crews found a lorry and three cars that had been in a significant collision.

“The driver of one car, a woman in her 70s, suffered serious wrist, ankle, hip and suspected pelvic injuries. Due to the damage to the vehicle, the woman was trapped in her car, and the roof was removed so she could be safely extricated by ambulance crews. She received emergency treatment at the scene and was immobilised using a spinal board and neck collar.

“A passenger in the car, a man in his 40s, was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Both patients were transferred by ambulance to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further assessment and treatment.
